This may be my best piece on Faye Wong yet. It's an image from her Hong Kong comeback concert in March 2011. It really isn't the best pose for a portrait as there are really not much to be drawn for the face. The focus shifts automatically to the hair, dress and background. That is also why I use color for the eye makeup and the feather headpiece... to make the drawing stand out. I used 0.5 color leads from Faber Castell.
However, the scanner couldn't really capture the striking color... turned out quite dull.
This is in A4 size, quite a challenge to draw as it is in half body, making everything smaller. I find it more difficult to draw in smaller scale as details are mostly not apparent. Nonetheless, it was fun to do... the hardest part would be the dark background. I used 4B mechanical pencil at first, smoothened it out with tissue paper after and layer again with 10B graphite pencil to get this dark.I'm quite happy with the result, not perfect... but still pretty.
Faye exudes an aura of exquisite calmness and elegance, which makes her so unique and popular among chinese communities around the globe. Her concerts are mostly focused on vocal performance with no dancers or guest
artists. However, she's renowned for having the most fashion forward make-ups, hairdos and outfits (quirky at times).
She was the first one to wear a stilletto on her head in her 2003 HK concert, Lady Gaga imitated that recently.
Imagine... after 7 years of hiatus, she's able to make a successful record breaking comeback concert tour without much publicity. Most of the tickets were sold within days after announcement. Online ticketing systems were mostly crashed, like the one in Malaysia. I was lucky enough to get 3 tickets. This drawing is to appease my raging nerve as we countdown to the concert date on 06 Nov, which is only less than 3 weeks away. Long live Faye!
In the spirit of her concert, check out this live performance titled LEGEND during the Chinese New Year Gala earlier in the year:[link]
